Deconstruction Services

The Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity ReStore is now offering deconstruction! Deconstruction is the selective dismantlement of building components, specifically for re-use, recycling and waste management. It differs from demolition, where a site is cleared of its building by the most expedient means. Deconstruction has also been defined as "construction in reverse." Buildings, like everything, have a life cycle. Deconstruction focuses on giving the material within a building a new life once the building as a whole can no longer continue.

Demolitions are relatively inexpensive and offer a quick method of clearing sites for new structures. On the other hand, these methods create s substantial amount of waste. Components within an old building may still be valuable, sometimes more valuable than at the time the building was constructed.

Deconstruction Process:

- Property owners contact the Habitat ReStore at: 414-257-9078 ex 10
- Once it is determined that we will accept materials for salvage, a time is set for the our Deconstruction Manager to meet with the owner to do a walk-thru of the property.
- The Deconstruction Manager determines how many volunteers are needed and work with the owner to determine an agreeable time to do the deconstruction.
- The owner must provide proof that the building has complied with lead and asbestos testing. The ReStore can provide the testing at a cost to the owner.
- For now there is no set fee for deconstruction, however a donation to Habitat for Humanity is strongly suggested.
- The owner will receive a tax receipt for those items salvaged and donated to the ReStore.

Insurance:

The Habitat ReStore is covered by an umbrella policy that covers all employees and volunteers on site. Certificates of Insurance are available upon request.

Benefits:

- Cut costs! Instead of having your contractor charge you for deconstruction, the ReStore will remove your items for little or no charge!
- Prevent usable materials from ending up in landfills.
- Receive a tax credit for your donation.
- Your donation will help fund Habitat for Humanity's mission of building affordable homes for low-income families.
