Green Initiatives

At Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity our mission is to provide affordable housing, which we believe is inextricably linked to the need to support safe, healthy communities and a sustainable environment.  We continue to work as an advocate of the green building movement to help more than just our homeowners.

Green building is a crucial element in helping us reach our goals of providing affordable housing to families in need.  Long term affordability is vital to the success of Habitat homeowners, and this is enhanced by  the “green” aspects of our construction.   Our building practices reduce our impact on the environment and reduce energy costs while increasing the long-term affordability of our homes.

Energy Efficiency & Green Building

We currently have all of our new homes tested and certified as Wisconsin Energy Star Homes and they exceed nationally accepted air-tightness and ventilation requirements by more than 30%.  We are able to continually improve our energy efficiency measures thanks to the generous support of Focus on Energy and Franklin Energy.

Thanks to a grant from the Home Depot Foundation, Milwaukee Habitat is certifying a number of our homes as Green Built Homes

Solar Workshops
Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity partners with We Energies and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association to install Photovoltaic and Solar Hot Water systems on Habitat homes.  These installs are done as training workshops for new installers looking to gain hands-on experience.  The systems then remain on the homes and produce clean energy for the Habitat homeowners, offsetting their standard utility bill.  We're proud to be supporting this growing industry and grateful to our partners and their work.
