In 2006, over 2600 volunteers contributed 74,000 volunteer hours.

Skilled electricians, plumbers and carpenters are always needed.  Occasional orientation and work days are set up for new volunteer individuals and groups.  Volunteers work all year round.

The next general Volunteer Orientations will be held at the Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity office/warehouse, at 3726 N. Booth St., Milwaukee 53212 on the following dates:

- Wednesday, May 21 at 6:00 pm  (Click here if you'd like help finding the address for this Orientation.)

- Saturday, June 14 at 10:00 am  (Click here if you'd like help finding the address for this Orientation.)

Anyone volunteering for the first time must attend.  Our orientation will last an hour and there may be limited seating so we urge you to be prompt.  Call Carrie Feehan at 562-6100 Ext. 14 or e-mail cfeehan@milwaukeehabitat.org to register or for more information on how you can join Habitat's volunteer corps.

Several Special Building Weeks are also held each year...

During Blitz Week (May 5-9, 2008), new houses are framed by volunteers working Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:00.  During our annual House Raising Week (June 23-27, 2008) and Building on Faith Week (September  8-12, 2008), volunteers provide framing teams and work on other projects.  If you would like to fill out a "2008 Special Build Week Registration" form and send it to Carrie Feehan, our Volunteer Coordinator, you may see our Download page to download it.  We will then contact you as needed, as the build week approaches.

WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

Our greatest need right now is skilled leadership, weekday volunteers for construction, and weekday office and warehouse help.  Please call us if you can help us out!

Be a House Leader - Lead the construction work

  • Assign tasks
  • Oversee quality of work performed
  • Teach, guide and encourage volunteers
  • Implement Habitat policies and safety guidelines
BUT ... If construction is not your interest, here are some other ways for you to be involved:

Be a House Assistant - Provide hospitality and ensure safety at the worksite
  • Greet workers, be the gatekeeper to the neighborhood
  • Guard the tools
  • Make safety checks (first aid, fire extinguisher, tools)
  • Maintain supplies
  • Supervise clean up at end of work shift and secure property
Be a Group Contact - Act as the liaison between your group and Habitat
  • Set up work dates for your group, schedule workers
  • Make sure all group members attend an orientation
  • Be sure construction workers bring proper tools

Serve on a committee:

  • Church Relations - build and maintain relationships with area churches
  • Development - identify new material and funding sources
  • House Leaders - serve and recruit others to serve as house and crew leaders
  • Family Selection - process applications and make recommendations to the Board of Directors
  • Public Relations - speak to groups, write articles for the newsletter, develop presentation materials, work with area media
  • Special Events - plan and work at fundraising, celebration and milestone events

Be a Warehouse Worker - Organize and repair tools

Spread the word - Join our Speaker's Bureau

Organize a Neighborhood Clean-Up effort

Prepare and serve food to Build Week volunteers (200 per day). We're not talking gourmet ... it could be anything from chili to hot dogs to cold sandwiches with potato chips and pickles.

Participate in the annual Plant Exchange
